City Stats Blog Series -- Newport News

The first city we want to write about in our City Stats Blog Series is Newport News!  If you live around here, you know that Newport News is an up-and-coming city!  There are apartments, new construction and renovations going up left and right!  Being in the center of our region, Newport News offers a great location for anyone who wants to be near it all!    If you’re not from here, below is a little bit of information that will help you get to know the city a little bit better!

·      Population in 2010:  193,172
·      48% male and 52% female (a nice, almost even split!)
·      Estimated median household income in 2009: $49,554
·      Land Area:  68.3 Sq Miles
·      Median Resident Age:  32.3 Years

The people of Newport News come from many different places and the diversity you will find here is incredible. German, Irish, Italian, and French ancestries are spread out in 2646 people per square mile. Of course, this makes for some delicious local restaurants, pizzerias, and bakeries!

Being near a Naval base holds many opportunities for employment. Stats show that the most common industries for males are construction and transportation equipment, while females tend to work in health care and education.
There are several colleges and universities located in Newport News, but the largest of them is CNU.  Christopher Newport University is located in the heart of Newport News and offers a scenic campus to venture around or attend a football game (Go Captains!! – We are alumni, can you tell?).   Strayer University, Everst College, and Centura College are also located in Newport News, just to name a few!
Newport News is also home to five public high schools and over fifteen public middle and elementary schools.

Homes in Newport News are reasonably priced and the market is fairly active compared to the rest of the country! Take a look at the chart below:

This city has a lot to offer and is definitely worth checking out if you’re looking to move!  As a reminder, all of the data above came from city-data.com!  For more information or sources, check out their website!

We hope that all this information was helpful and informative!  We will be back next week with our next City Stats Blog Series on the City of Williamsburg!!
